Background

Chichester Harbour Race Week (previously and still colloquially known as Fed Week) is a well-attended dinghy regatta that takes place every August. Local sailors test their skills against their peers from other Harbour clubs and visitors come to experience the tidal yet sheltered waters of beautiful Chichester Harbour. Being based at Hayling Island Sailing Club ensures that the event enjoys an excellent venue and quality race management.

With approaching 400 boats divided into 18 fleets, both class and handicap, on 3 courses, race management on and off the water is a major undertaking. Race Week has a track record of innovative use of IT to manage the entry list and produce timely results by using good but essentially single-user software. This inevitably led to bottlenecks and difficulties so in 2014 the decision was made to exploit cloud-based technology to improve the availability of information to the benefit of both the race management teams and the competitors.

The solution was to implement a competitor database – the entry list – in the cloud so that multiple event administrators could access it simultaneously via their web browsers. A parallel competitor list in the results calculation program – Sailwave – is automatically synchronised with the cloud database. Having an entry list available at all times over the internet also opens up many more possibilities as we shall see.
